Maybe Motivation Is The Problem

“With mindfulness of the present moment, we can gradually stop the subconscious ways we make ourselves unhappy, and let go of the past, to be right here in the present. That’s the most helpful thing we can do for ourselves and others”

- Trungram Gyalwa

It looks like we want happiness but subconsciously we are actually looking for unhappiness..

I  felt the truth of this the moment I heard this is 2015. I got it. I got it for myself but I also realised that’s exactly what I had witnessed in others too.

I’ve been the owner and operator of personal trainer studios and gyms for 15 years and what I know is that we have all been conditioned to pick ourselves apart even in our greatest state of motivation ..

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves (not just when it comes to our bodies - our society has us doing this with everything .. our financial goals and insatiable desire to have more is another obvious example of this)

And even if we achieve that goal we set another one almost immediately - we are never really living in the present.

We are always living in the future and that brings some kind of dissatisfaction.
If we want to live with more well-being we have to learn to live in the present moment.
We have to let go of our compulsion to replay the past and our desire to project ourselves in the future.

When we talk about letting go we aren’t saying to just let things happen and not care - the teaching of letting go is about having us understand we need to not cling to the past.

To not have too much attachment to things that have already happened because there are real things happening for you right now that are occurring and so why not put your focus on what’s actually here.

An example given - somebody has hurt you or embarrassed you.

If you think about that again and again you are living it again, that memory keeps it alive in your mind.

You are feeding that. It’s self destructive. That’s self sabotage.

And ultimately we are assisting that person in hurting us or harming us - we don’t need vengeance, we just need to move on.

Our thinking mind can effectively only think one thing at one time.

So if you are engaged in the present moment, which is what we are being trained to do as we meditate, but we can also do this by being mindful, focusing solely on one thing at any one time- then we cannot engage with the past.

We aren’t attached to the past, we aren’t clinging to the past.

That’s why meditation helps - by focusing on the present moment we aren’t giving ourselves the cause and conditions to be attached to the past and we can achieve more from the present 🤍
Before you rush into the day ahead - give yourself an opportunity to be here now.

As you are. As it is.

Unhook from worrying about what has already happened and unburden yourself from thinking you can predict the future. You can’t, so don’t.
